Flowers in Church
Flowers in church
At the General Synod in London in February 2026 a motion was passed calling for sustainable flowers in churches. This has caused a stir in the floristry profession because it challenges churches to abandon the use of Oasis which is petroleum-based and non-bio-degradable, adding to the pollution of particulates in the rivers and oceans. Many cut flowers are flown across the world and have large carbon footprints, so churches are being encouraged to find ways of being more eco-friendly in their floral displays. At the recent PCC meeting we acknowledged the immense contribution made over many years by many folk in arranging and providing for the cost of flowers which beautify our worship, and in particular Joan Grebby who has single-handedly arranged flowers for us for some years now. The time has come for Joan to hang up her pruning shears and we want to say very big THANK YOU to her for all that she has done. Meanwhile a group of people have come together to provide ongoing floral displays in church that will consist much more of growing plants in pots and using greenery and flowers grown locally and which will change through the seasons. If you’d like to be involved speak to Catherine Saeed, and there will still be the opportunity for floral arrangements and there will still be costs involved, so if anyone would like to contribute to the cost of on-going floral decoration (perhaps in memory of a loved one or in thanksgiving for a celebration) please give money to Dorothy or Sue our churchwardens. We will continue to keep the years’ mind of all our loved ones each week.
STOP PRESS! There is a box at the back of church for donationms for Easter Flowers! All contributions gratefully received!
