Stations of the Cross

The Stations of the Cross are a 14-step devotion inaugurated by St Francis that commemorates the Passion of Jesus Christ. The 14 devotions, or stations, focus on specific events of His last day, beginning with His condemnation. The stations form a mini pilgrimage as we move from station to station. At each station, a specific event from Christ's last day is recalled and specific prayers are recited, and then the we move to the next station until all 14 are complete.

Join us in church every Friday in Lent at 5pm

The Stations of the Cross are often found in churches as a series of 14 small icons or images. They can also appear in church yards arranged along paths. The stations are most commonly prayed during Lent on Wednesdays and Fridays, and especially on Good Friday, the day of the year upon which the events actually occurred. At St Francis, as well as Fridays at 5pm on Good Friday, we will take part in the Procession of Witness organised by Heaton Churches Together, where we walk with a cross from St Francis Church via the other churches on Heaton Road to a service in Hadrian Square on Shields Road.
